ABOUT NMRA

Founded in 1999 and recently revived, the NMRA is passionate about conserving and improving our neighbourhood.

Founded in 1999 ~ Revived in 2025

NMRA was founded in 1999 by a group of passionate residents. It achieved a great deal in its early days, including preventing Diamond Plaza 2 from being built, beautifying the area, cleaning streets and drains ans generally instilling pride in the neighborhood. It had strong support in the community, with over 119 households signing up. Perhaps its biggest strength was the sense of community it fostered, annually hosting a street party.

For a number of unfortunate reasons, the association became defunct in the second decade of the new millennium. However, in 2025 it was legally and spiritually revived and looks to grow stronger than ever.

Our Vision for the Future

The NMRA is committed to promoting and preserving a clean, peaceful, and secure environment for both residents and businesses in this Nairobi suburb. Despite finevirable challenges ahead, the association will work diligently to uphold the area’s unique character amidst increasing population pressures and shifting socio-political dynamics. NMRA envisages a well-serviced, safe, and environmentally conscious community. It strives to earn your trust by effectively representing residents’ interests-whether through dialogue, advocacy, public engagement, or legal action when required.

Join NMRA and stay informed, improve roads, help in development control, have a say in the future of your neighborhood, increase water supply, enhance security in your area, .

Benefits of joining NMRA

We are here for you

There are many benefits to being a member of NMRA but may we suggest that before you ask what benefits accrue from joining us, perhaps a more pertinent question would be what would you personally. and we, as a neighbourhood, lose if you and others don’t join? Will our estate remain beautiful and low density? What about noise, traffic, pollution, illegal businesses, illegal parking? Will you still want to live here in years to come if these things are not controlled? It is a very affordable annual fee and the NMRA team work completely “pro bono” with no remuneration. All funds collected go towards the estate.

Development Control

We see NMRA’s prime role as fighting to keep New Muthaiga as as a low density residential estate. In today’s Nairobi, that means being very proactive.

Initially, it is a matter of working with the council to ensure that the area retains its current zoning and also using our membership of Northern Block to be a part of any future planning changes or master plans to ensure our views are incorporated and respected.

However, despite the zoning laws being what they are, there will inevitably be challenges with enforcement, which will require legal processes. NMRA will be taking on these challenges to ensure the nature of the neighbourhood is not allowed to be altered.

Our vision is for the area to grow as one that is low density, residential.

Security

The NMRA has held a number of meetings with Kenya Police, at Nyari and Muthaiga police stations, as well as with private security companies operating in the area. We are establishing a strong working relationship with them.

Our security subcommittee periodically meets with police and security officers to discuss the security status and to update residents.

Environment

The NMRA is actively involved in a number of initiatives to improve the environment in the neighbourhood. Principally, we have had success in controlling noise pollution, particularly from events venues, working with both the police and with the Liquor Licencing Board to ensure excess noise and street parking is controlled and adheres to the law.

We have worked closely with KPLC to restore street lighting to Thigiri ridge.

Additionally, we are working to resolve several pollution incidents in the area. See our Environment page for more information on environmental standards we are enforcing. in the neighbourhood.

We have received very positive feedback from residents on these issues.

In the future we want to expand this area, working on beautification, planting, signage and regular clean ups.

Road & Streetlight Repairs and Maintenance

We have had considerable success in restoring street lighting to Thigiri Ridge. Most of the cabling had been stolen and the entire road was dark. This has mostly been resolved through hard work and good contacts and we will continue to strive to upgrade lighting and
improve security.

We have established contacts at KURA (Kenya Roads Authority) and liaise with them over fixing of potholes, road drainage clearance and footpaths. We will continue to build on this relationship to keep our roads in good condition.

 Social Space

NMRA also serves as a vibrant community hub by bringing neighbors together, fostering strong con- nections, and supporting a shared sense of belonging.

Through regular meetings, social events, and collaborative projects, we provide a platform for residents to voice concerns, share ideas, and work collectively to improve our neighborhood.

Whether it’s organizing clean-up drives, seasonal celebrations, or safety initiatives, the association plays a central role in creating a welcoming, engaged, and resilient community.
